Golovkin destroys Martirosyan to defend titles

Gennady Golovkin won his 20th consecutive middleweight title defense with a second-round knockout of Vanes Martirosyan.

Instead, Golovkin finds himself back in his adopted home in Southern California, where he's making a fraction of that potential payday to fight a gritty veteran contender with nothing to lose in a famous outdoor ring where insane things happen regularly.

Saunders has remained vocal about wanting to fight Golovkin, especially when it looked like Chris Eubank Jr was going to be the one to secure a mega-fight against Triple G before Kell Brook stepped up. However, that was all for naught as Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KO's), 27, tested positive for trace amounts of the banned substance clenbuterol in random urine tests conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on February 17 and February 20 in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico.

"I want everyone", Golovkin said.

Hail the champ: Gennady Golovkin, right, is congratulated by Vanes Martirosyan.

In the post fight interview GGG said that he is willing to fight anyone division and that he simply wants to stay active and clean it out.

In the end, the rematch with Alvarez is probably too big of a fight - and too big of an opportunity - for Triple G to refuse.

"This is my destiny fight", Martirosyan said at the final pre-fight press conference. The bout will be for Golovkin's WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight titles. Focus, instead, on Oscar De La Hoya's claim to TMZ on April 25 that Alvarez would be tested "every day from now until the fight" to make everyone's suspicions go away. The fight will begin in a few minutes. Yet for his bout with Martirosyan, who will be buoyed by intense support from Los Angeles' Armenian community, he will receive an estimated $2 million and certainly no greater than $3 million, as the fight will be shown on regular HBO and not pay per view.

There are significant differences between Golovkin and many of today's crop of fighters, several of whom have copied the Floyd Mayweather approach of money-first, often at the expense of entertainment and competitive (or risky) fights.

But then Golovkin inflicted a series of blows. All three judges saw Ceballo a shutout victor with 40-36 scorecards over Phan, who's 0-6-1 since beginning his career with three consecutive victories.

Under his Nevada suspension, Alvarez does not have to take any drug tests until a month before his next fight. His camp has already started the negotiations, as they have announced that they are moving on and that the Alvarez rematch has only a 10% chance of happening.

With his father standing behind him, Martirosyan has his own reasons to contend for the championship belt.
