IDC: Smartphone shipments down 2.9% in Q1 2018, Apple gains on Samsung

ZTE, however, dropped a spot on the top-ten list, and shipped half as many phones as it did a year ago. The drop stemmed from a revised smartphone launch strategy that resulted in no flagship device launch in the first quarter, according to Counterpoint.

On April 25 Patent Apple posted a report titled "China's Smartphone Market Shrank 8% in Q1 2018 While Apple's iPhone Sales beat the Trend Spectacularly".

From January through April of 2017, smartphone shipments amounted to 344.4 million units, while the same period this year amounted to 334.3 million units, a 2.9 percent decline. The China market was the biggest driver of this decline with shipment volumes dipping below 100 million in the quarter, which hasn't happened since the third quarter of 2013. Samsung is tied with Xiaomi for first ... With it's big picture numbers, you get a sense of how the market is doing at any quarter within the year. But I feel that the death of smartphone is not going to be so soon.

Huawei climbed to a new market share high of 11.8% even as it remained in third overall.

In Q1 Xiaomi was the fastest growing brand, more than doubling its market share to 8.4 percent from 3.7 percent a year ago.

Xiaomi Corp., which filed documents for an initial public offering in Hong Kong, has said India accounts for three of its top five sales channels that together contributed 32% of its global revenue in 2017. This is a sizeable number compared to other iPhone models, with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus shipping 12.5 million and 8.3 million units each.

"In the US and the European top five markets, iPhone 8 sold in marginally higher numbers than the flagship iPhone X, indicating that as early iPhone X demand is fulfilled the price difference between the two devices is playing a notable role in consumers' choices".

"Huawei has managed to significantly increase its presence across the big five European markets, and now holds nearly a fifth of sales in the three months to March 2018", said Dominic Sunnebo, Global Director for Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, reflecting on the growth of the Chinese handset giant, despite having been effectively blocked from sales in the US. "We expect the S9 Plus to become the best-selling Android smartphone globally in the second quarter of 2018", Strategy Analytics said. It continues to grow in the India smartphone market along with increasing efforts to enter new markets and capture more market share in Q2 2018. "There have been no signs of recovery since the market started to decline in Q4 a year ago".

Elsewhere in the USA, the Google Pixel smartphone range continues to gain ground, chalking up its best-ever quarter of sales as the search/ads/AI firm bakes hardware into its lineup.

Even though Huawei shipments grew year-over-year, the company also had a troubled first quarter in the U.S. this year.

The market as a whole increased by 2 per cent to 345.5 million, with Samsung and Apple retaining the top two positions. They're normally quite affordable, too, as ZTE has to keep its ...

ZTE has also been barred by the United States government from buying American technology, a serious blow to the company that reportedly buys 70 percent of its smartphone chips from U.S. semiconductor maker Qualcomm.
