Visit of Prime Minister of India to Sweden (16-17 April 2018)

India's Prime Minister Modi was in Stockholm on Tuesday for the first visit to Sweden by an Indian PM in nearly 30 years. I believe that the most important topic in our talks was how Sweden can have a win-win partnership with India on the opportunities arising out of India's development. India also credited Scandinavian Nations for initiating environmental solutions, port modernisation, cold chain, skill development, innovation among other areas.

The Prime Ministers also pledged to deepen cooperation between India and the Nordic countries and focused their discussions on key issues related to global security, economic growth, innovation and climate change. Charles Frump, MD of Volvo Car India, who attended the meet, said Volvo shared their vision of electrified vehicles with Prime Minister Modi and stated how it was in line with the Indian government's vision. Modi also said India and Sweden will continue their close cooperation on the worldwide stage.

The visit sparked some criticism from the Indian immigrant community in Sweden, many of whom are critical about Stockholm's willingness to put aside Modi's controversial human rights record. "In security cooperation, especially in cyber security cooperation, we have made a decision to strengthen our cooperation". The partnership sets the framework for future cooperation to jointly tackle societal challenges including innovation driven challenges on cross sectoral issues with multi-stakeholder/agency participation from both countries, it said.

On his part, Lofven said that he believed that Sweden and India make a flawless match.

A separate silent protest - with participants encouraged to wear white in solidarity - organised by a group of independent women will take place at Parliament Square on Wednesday afternoon to express "pain, sorrow, shock" and condemnation of the rapes in Kathua and Unnao, and beyond.

Modi's next stop is London, where he plans to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Modi's visit is the first by any Indian Prime Minister in the last 30 years. He will also have a brief stopover in Berlin, Germany, on April 20 while on his way back home.
