257 killed in Algeria plane crash

At least 257 people have been reported dead in a military plane crash in northern Algeria on Wednesday, Algeria's Defense Ministry said.

The unfortunate incident happened at the Boufarik military airport, an air force base near the capital, Algiers.

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has declared three days of national mourning, according to the BBC.

The Ilyushin II-76 transport plane was bound for Tindouf in southwest Algeria.

It was due to make a stopover in Tindouf, home to many refugees from neighbouring Western Sahara, a disputed territory annexed by Morocco. "The bodies of the victims are being taken to the Central Hospital of the Army in Ain Naadja to identify them".

More than 200 people are believed dead after an Algerian military plane crashed near a major base.

NTSB investigators were at the crash site on Tuesday examining the burned wreckage next to a tree.

In October the same year, a military plane crashed in the south of the country during a training exercise, killing the two men on board.
