Those allegations include the discussion of cutting the soccer program in executive session, improper notice on the agenda of March 12 of the appointment of a new school board member and the release of information discussed during executive session by a school board member.

At its April 10 meeting, the board took a closer look at projected revenues for the coming year and finalized plans for closing a budget gap that is estimated at $1.5 million, down from $3.3 million in February, before the district began identifying areas of savings. The resignation of Director of Curriculum/Instruction/Assessment Sherri Nelson was approved Monday night, which leads to another position opening in the district. Board member Tyler Henry commented that busing has a "tendency to be a moving target", and every year can be different.

"Our orchestra program, under the direction of Mia Kruse has increased to 200 students, and we have passed the place where one person could handle all of these students", Nebelsick said.

A variety of other school districts around the state have been trying out the "restart" flexibility option, but it would be new for Guilford County Schools. "Education has given me the opportunity to go, do and see things that I had never dreamed of". The state determines the rate that public school districts must contribute to the retirement fund, and the rate has been increasing each year for the last decade.

The proposed budget will be voted on by district residents May 15.

Because of this discussion, a decision to change in school start times at Cañon City Middle School and Cañon City High School has been tabled for next school board meeting.

Also at the school board meeting, the board approved the JROTC Academic Bowl Championship Trip and Cadet Leadership Camp.

In light of the positive revenue outlook, Malone said he plans to meet with the chairmen of the district's Salary Committee to discuss possible salary increases as a step in preparing the district's 2018-19 budget.
