She said the strike will continue until the state increases funding for basic needs such as textbooks, supplies, chairs and desks. Educators in other states, increasingly angry over stagnating wages, are also considering walk-outs.

Camanche School District Superintendent Tom Parker said the program was so successful at the elementary school they want to offer it at the middle school and high school as well.

"Some of our teachers, they told us that they're not looking forward to this", Buschman said.

West Virginia teachers were on strike for nine consecutive school days.

In April, lawmakers raised salaries for teachers by an average of $6,100, increased pay for support staff by $1,250, and added $50 million in funding for schools. With demands for statewide strikes spreading from Kentucky, Arizona and SC to Florida, Iowa and Texas, the unions have warned teachers that strikes are illegal and would lead to "harsh consequences".

The Senate also voted to repeal a $5 per-night hotel/motel tax, which was a small part of that education budget package.

The Camanche School Board on Wednesday approved a motion for each building in the Camanche School District to participate in the AEA new teacher induction program.

Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association spokesman Van Shea Iven says the walkout has not affected any competitions, and he doesn't expect it to.

"We are here today to rally support, not just for our teachers in the area, but for teachers across the state who have walked out of the classroom", Cole said.

Sharica Cole, Ben Franklin Science Academy staffer, said she felt enthused by the show of support. Organizer Noah Karvelis told The Associated Press that Ducey and GOP legislative leaders have not responded to their requests for negotiations, so they see no choice but to move to walkouts.

"We are about 90 percent of the way to our year-one ask for education and, so, we're close", said Oklahoma Education Association president Alicia Priest. But the package wasn't almost as much as educators demanded, so major school districts shuttered and the walkout ensued.
