NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blues Creator Steven Bochco Passes Away at Seventy-Four

A statement released to several media outlets revealed that he died peacefully in his sleep.

Bochco received a transplant in 2014 which helped prolong his life.

Bochco won 10 primetime Emmys and created hit TV shows including Hill Street Blues, LA Law, NYPD Blue and Doogie Howser, MD.

"A devastating loss. For television", Kelley said today about the death of Bochco. I'm so proud of Doogie Howser, mostly for being a Bochco show.

The producer behind such groundbreaking series as "Hill Street Blues", "NYPD Blue", and "L.A. Law" reveled in pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. Joss Whedon, creator of the cult TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, cited him as a major personal influence.

Asked how he could risk gambling on a musical like "Cop Rock" given the richness of his ABC pact, Bochco once joked, "With my deal, how could I not?" Steven Bochco gave me my first break on "Bay City Blues" and brought me to Hollywood.

The recipient of virtually every imaginable industry award over his prestigious career, Bochco was nominated for an Emmy 30 times in his capacities as producer and writer, winning 10. Spielberg and Bochco's friendship began in 1971 when Spielberg directed and Bochco wrote the Murder by the Book episode from iconic 60s and 70s crime drama series Columbo.
