The highlight of the Redmi 5 is the 18:9 display on the front. Both the Redmi 5 and the Redmi 5 Plus (or the Redmi Note 5) bring bezel-less screens to the masses. The display has a pixel density of 282 PPI. The smartphone comes in three internal storage options, one with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal memory, one with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage, and one with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage, all of which are expandable up to 256 GB via a microSD card.
The Redmi 5 price in India starts at Rs 7,999 for the 2GB RAM/ 16GB storage variant, while the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage model is priced at Rs 8,999 and lastly, the 4GB RAM / 64GB storage model is priced at Rs 10,999. It runs on a Snapdragon 450 SoC with either 2GB/3GB or 4GB RAM. Qualcomm in its press release notes that the Snapdragon 450 chipset will provide significant improvements in "battery life, graphics and compute performance, imaging and LTE connectivity" over the Snapdragon 435 mobile platform. It also comes with a 16MP front camera with flash but the same rear camera.
In the camera department, the Redmi 5 comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera that has features like f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, and LED flash. It even has an LED light at the front for brighter selfies. The battery charging standard stays the same, with the phones having a support for 5V/2A charging and not better than that. The new MI Drop version is also included in the latest OS update, featuring a redesigned user interface and the new ability to transfer files between different Android phones, not just Mi devices.
Xiaomi hasn't compromised on the build quality of the Redmi 5 and has retained the full metal design. The Snapdragon 450, although it has been around since past year, is seen in just a handful of devices.
The Redmi 5 is available in four color options of Gold, Light Blue, Black and Rose Gold.
As far as the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is concerned, the smartphone is similar to the Redmi 5 which was launched in China at the end of previous year by Xiaomi. It also features an IR Blaster at the top, something Xiaomi has been adding to its smartphones since ages. The Redmi series is Xiaomi's ultra-affordable smartphones series which offer decent specifications at extremely attractive prices.
