Student Killed In 'Accidental' Shooting At Alabama High School

- A 17-year-old student at Huffman High School in Birmingham is dead after a classmate got a gun in the school and shot her.

Wilson said the incident was being treated as an "accidental shooting at this particular time". It was one of the deadliest USA school shootings in United States, where dozens of massacres have occurred in recent years. The Birmingham City School system said in a statement that the shooting prompted a brief lockdown. Florida schools hooting suspect formally charged with 17 counts of murderBirmingham Police Sgt. Bryan Shelton told local media organizations that one of the students suffered life-threatening injuries.

The girl who was killed was about to turn 18, had been accepted into college and had aspirations to be a nurse, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said.

"Our hearts are heavy", he said. According to the police, the Huffman High School shooting was different from the kind of school shootings happening in the recent times, as it was not like "someone from the outside came into the school". A 17-year-old boy, who is a junior and a football teammate, was injured in the leg. The shooting occurred at 3:40 p.m.

Security was ramped up at the school, and students, as well as faculty, will have access to a full crisis team, officials said.

The girl, along with a 17-year-old boy who was injured at the scene, were rushed to UAB Hospital in separate Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service trucks.

"We are not saying he shot her or did not shoot her".

Bryan Shelton told reporters on Wednesday that the shooting appeared to have been accidental.

Some of those students actually witnessed the shooting this afternoon. Just last week, as police and school officials investigated a reported threat at Huffman Middle School, a gun was found outside an entrance door, believed to have been left there as students prepared to be scanned and have their backpacks checked.

But I'm quickly reminded this is not just a student, but someone's daughter. Tonight, my prayers are with her, the other victim, and their families. I'm praying for the family of this young lady who tragically lost her life way too early.
