Nashville mayor resigns after pleading guilty to felony theft

Barry admitted in January to an affair with Rob Forrest, her head of security and a 31-year officer on the Metro Nashville police force. He called Barry "a friend" and said he hoped she would be able to move past "a terrible moment" in her life. During that time, their romantic affiliations allegedly occurred on the clock and therefore, resulted in the theft of property from the Metro Nashville city funds amounted to $10,000 spent in the relationship.

Under her guilty plea, Barry agreed to reimburse the city of Nashville $11,000 and serve three years of probation, according to court documents obtained by CNN. "She's known for her accessibility and remarkable visibility", Garrison said last month. She has said the relationship is over but has not disclosed when it ended.

Barry had remained adamant that she will not resign from her position as mayor.

The former lead body guard who had an extramarital affair with Nashville Mayor Megan Barry has pleaded guilty to theft of property. The document also provided deleted cellphone conversations from Forrest's phone during the trips. The Bureau found nude photos of a woman on Forrest's phone, though they did not say whether the woman in question was Barry. This presumably was treated as evidence that the mayor herself had contrived to make the trip and arranged for Forrest's presence without a legitimate reason for it.

Barry's admission followed the loss of the Barrys' only child, Max, in July after an overdose on a combination of drugs, including opioids.

In January, Barry publicly apologized for the almost two-year affair with the married bodyguard. That spending was likely related to travel and overtime costs incurred by Forrest as he guarded Barry on the road.

"I have lots of work to do in this city and every day I get up and I do it", she said.

The scandal forced Barry to take a backseat in the biggest political fight of her career - approval May 1 for a referendum on raising four taxes to pay for a $5.4 billion transit plan.

A report by USA Today Network-Tennessee reported that Forrest received hundreds of hours of overtime while working in Nashville as he escorted the mayor to hot yoga classes, hockey games, late-night concerts and other events. Barry has repeatedly denied that their affair took place on the taxpayers' dime.

She said Vice Mayor David Briley would be sworn in as mayor on Tuesday.

She also tweeted out a similar sentiment, which links to another statement, also echoing the same feelings. He will serve in that role until an August 2 election.
