Houston reports first flu-related death of child this season

Due to high demand for flu shots this February, all New School students have access to the Student Health Services with or without the insurance plan.

Health officials say 18 more people have died from flu-related illness in San Diego in the last week. "As healthcare professionals, it is our duty to do whatever we can to protect their health and safety".

"It is not too late to get vaccinated". "It's to educate students on why they should get the flu vaccines and not just the pros and cons of it, but how to prevent it". Every flu shot a person receives also adds to their long-term immunity.

There's some good news for expecting moms who are trying to weather a brutal flu season - a new study shows that getting the flu vaccine during pregnancy causes no harm to newborns.

The study provides the longest-term look at the vaccines' effect on newborn health, with the babies followed out to 6 months of life, said study author Dr. Lakshmi Sukumaran, a pediatric infectious disease researcher with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But the part that anxious him most was the chance that the vaccine wouldn't perform well in an H1N1-dominated season and that such a failure might undercut flu vaccination coverage, in general. "I don't regret getting the flu shot, even though I was told it's only 30% effective".

The weekly surveillance data for the prior week is released on Wednesdays. Outbreaks are defined as clusters of flu cases. H3N2 is the most lethal of the seasonal strains and has been around for 50 years.

They found no link between these fatalities or hospitalizations and women's decisions to get vaccinated against whooping cough or the flu during pregnancy.

Apprehension and misinformation about the flu and flu vaccinations spread online can easily be debunked by referencing accredited sources. Other countries, including Canada, continued recommending the LAIV based on different research showing that it was effective. "Most deaths from pertussis are in very, very young babies who aren't eligible to get the vaccine", Sukumaran said.

The flu vaccine is available at doctors' offices and retail pharmacies. Symptoms of the flu include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headaches, vomiting, sore throat, or diarrhea.

"Influenza deaths are very unfortunate, but they occur in higher numbers during a severe flu season", Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. The state only tracks flu deaths of children.

The percentage of people who showed up at local emergency departments with influenza-like symptoms stayed the same last week at 5 percent of all visits. Hospitalization rates presage death rates, so there is gravity in this data. It was first licensed in 2003 and is approved for healthy people ages 2 to 49.

The flu shot also helps their baby.

The CDC recommends that those who are sick should be treated as early as possible with flu antiviral drugs.
