United States men's curlers beat Switzerland, keep playoff hopes alive

There were signs at the beginning of the week, at least in the women's tournament, that the world had caught up to Canada.

Nurse's penalty proved costly, as US hockey icon Hilary Knight deflected Sidney Moran's shot past Canada's Shannon Szabados to give the United States a 1-0 lead with just 26 seconds left in the first.

The country has never won Olympic gold in men's or women's curling. They're now guaranteed an Olympic medal - either gold or silver - and marks the first medal for the USA since in 2006, when the men won the country's only other curling medal.

Kevin Koe's team started 4-0 in the men's event before three straight mid-week losses ratcheted up the pressure.

With the win, the United States claimed their spot in the semifinal, where they will face off against Canada once again with a spot in the gold medal match on the line at 6:05 a.m. EST on Thursday morning. Redemption was on the mind of the Canadians. In subsequent remarks left on Twitter, she noted that the United States has bigger fish to fry at the moment - and that the backlash against her comment seemed rather over-the-top.

"They wanted to prove to everybody that they could do it as well and really just bring it back for America", she said. "Third time's a charm", Edin said. Sweden defeated them 10-4 in round-robin play and won the bronze medal in 2014 in Sochi.

"But we don't want to go home empty-handed, so as much as this sucks right now, if we can come out, play well and win tomorrow, and go home with a medal - that'll take some of the sting off". "We'll try and regroup".

With the Winter Olympics chugging along, and curling getting quite a bit of coverage, the Cheers actress took to Twitter to complain about it. He also said the team would send them both a Team USA curling shirt.

Reid struggled at the shooting range in her portion of the relay as the second US athlete on the course. Pro football players have jumped on the bandwagon too.

Matt Hamilton, the team's second, is a bombastic, baseball hat-wearing, moustachioed character who is garnering a lot of attention for his swagger on the ice.

"There are lots of positives to take from this and learn from".

"We got fooled a little by the ice". "We rallied the troops and rallied each other". They need to win their final game on Wednesday - the men play Great Britain (11:05 p.m. Tuesday Madison time) and the women play Sweden (5:05 a.m. Madison time) - to have a chance to make it into a tiebreaker for the final semifinal spot.
