Utah rookie Mitchell soars to Slam Dunk crown


Despite being the slam dunk champion, I'm still the same 13th pick.

The 21-year-old was the star of the show but the dunk of the night certainly belonged to Dallas Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr.

The Skills Challenge is the third event bettors can wager on during All-Star Saturday Night, and a big man has won it each of the previous two years.

Following his first flawless 50-point alley-oop dunk with one hand, Mitchell's final and winning dunk saw him break out into a Vince Carter Raptors jersey to complete his replication of the "It's over" pose used by Carter in 2000.

Taking center stage at All-Star Saturday Night in the Slam Dunk Contest, Jazz rookie Donovan Mitchell did what he's done throughout his first year as a pro.

After his 46-point start, Nance capped off his performance with an impressive two-handed double-tap-on-the-backboard slam that gave him a flawless score of 50. Now with the Cleveland Cavaliers, he is part of a serious contender and will have the chance to earn a championship in his very first season with them. He caught it and did a one-handed tomahawk dunk as he jumped over his sister, Hart and his son.

Thirty-four years after his father won the initial NBA Slam Dunk Contest back in 1984, Cavs forward Larry Nance Jr redid his dad's most famous slam.

His first two dunks resulted in scores of 48 and 50. For that dunk, Mitchell wore a Darrell Griffith Jazz jersey.

"I think it definitely builds a lot of hype around your name, but I'm going to continue being the same kid that, to be honest, a lot of you didn't know going to Utah", Mitchell said. "I felt great about it last Thursday, and then I got traded".

Later, Nance brought his dad out to toss him the ball for an alley-oop that earned a ideal score. "It's something I will cherish forever". Also, Victor Oladipo of the Indiana Pacers couldn't impress the celebrity judges, failing in the opening round largely because he missed all three attempts for his first dunk.

Booker beat 2016 champion Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors and Tobias Harris of the Los Angeles Clippers. Booker made 20 of 25 3-pointers.
