Cobra Kai teaser trailer reignites the Karate Kid rivalry for sequel series

In the first trailer for YouTube Red's "Karate Kid" reboot, titled "Cobra Kai", Ralph Macchio's Daniel-san stares down his old nemesis, played again by Billy Zabka, at Johnny's new dojo where they still teach students to "strike first, strike hard, no mercy". "It's next generation Karate Kid".

While there were three direct sequels to the film, plus a remake in 2010 and an animated series, the original rivalry from the first movie between new kid Daniel LaRusso and school bully Johnny Lawrence has not been revisited before. Macchio and Zabka are executive producing with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossburg. We're also hoping that Elisabeth Shue will make a much-needed cameo!

According to Entertainment Weekly, Johnny has a son named Robby (Tanner Buchanan) who is determined to prove himself to be nothing like his father, which probably doesn't feel all that great. Ed Asner will appear as a guest star.

Courtney Henggeler (Mom) will play Macchio's wife and Mary Mouser (Freakish) plays their daughter. With Mr. Miyagi's life lessons, Daniel has found personal success in his own family and career as a auto dealer.

So you can understand why his old rival Daniel would disapprove of Cobra Kai being reopened, and why he'd object with Johnny sculpting young minds and fists.

Honestly, this series looks better than I anticipated, though admittedly this is a pretty short teaser. It has been 34 years since The Karate Kid was first in theaters. It will debut later in 2018 on YouTube Red, which fought giants such as Amazon and Hulu to get the film. However, with a story written by Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine), along with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle), there's bound to be plenty of amusing built into the series.
