Ford confirms 520kW GT500 Mustang

Ford will be looking to provide some strong competition against the likes of the Dodge Challenger Hellcat and the Demon, as well as the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

Ford goes over a bit of the history of the nameplate in the video, but also gives us a few sneaky teasers of the auto. However, it is unclear as to what specific V8 will power the new GT500.

The high-performance version of the Mustang, the GT500 nameplate was last seen in 2015, being replaced with the GT350. And we can't wait to drive it.

Certainly, there were no hints about detail like that in few paragraphs of press info issued with the teaser video.

If you thought the upcoming Bullitt was the most noteworthy Mustang news Ford had to offer the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, think again. No, the GT500 takes the fastest Ford Mustang back to its tyre-shredding tank-slapping self. The statement says, "Loaded with the most venom ever, the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 with its 700-plus horsepower supercharged V-8 will be the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever".

Ford honed its handling craft on the GT350 and GT350R, so we fully expect the 2019 GT500 to have suspension and brakes that are perfectly matched the 700-plus horsepower V8 making it a road course superstar and a suitable quarter-miler.

"Embodying Ford Performance team's motorsport expertise, this new Mustang is engineered to stand apart on roadways and racetracks, thanks to its new innovative track technologies, performance hardware, plus aggressive and functional track-tuned styling", Ford wrote in a brief news release.
