USA Hockey tabs Williamsville's Leggio for Olympic team


He earned All-America honors twice while at UND and now plays in Finland in the KHL. "There'll be a gold-medal effort and there won't be one guy that puts on that jersey that this isn't the highlight of their hockey career and the highlight of their family's career".

Leggio, a graduate of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute now plays in Germany for EHC München of the DEL and has represented Team USA in two IIHF Men's World Championships in 2010 and 2014.

That changes this year as the NHL announced last April the league would not release its players or schedule a break in the season so its players could participate.

Training camp starts January 28 in Latvia.

The roster announcement, carried live on several networks, was made at the Hall of Champions at Hockey Canada's office in Calgary.

Because the National Hockey League is withholding its players from competing at the Games, Canada's most famous players such as Sidney Crosby and Carey Price aren't making the trip to Pyeongchang, South Korea, next month.

"I look at the picture of me in the hospital and can't help but cry", the 31-year-old winger said via social media.

"I think Canadians are going to get behind this team".

Before it was all about best-on-best and a collection of professional players taking over the Olympic show, hockey was still a big-time draw for Canadians at the Winter Games.

After that stint, the team will travel to PyeongChang and march with the rest of the Canadian athletes in the opening ceremony and then travel to Incheon for its third exhibition, a February 12 date vs. Sweden. "... These guys are both pros, they're both every experienced on the Europe ice, and they have the ability to keep their team in the game". I think that's pretty special.

"But for the players that are going there, they're playing for their country and it's still going to be a huge tournament, a lot of people watching and I think it's going to be a great tournament, even if the National Hockey League is not there". "Everybody was given an opportunity". Players on the Olympic roster are comprised mostly of athletes playing in Russia, Switzerland and various other European countries.

She's played in 24 total games for Team USA with four goals and five assists.

No juniors were included on the roster as officials suggested they thought it would be too much to ask teens to adjust to a "man's game" at the Olympic tourney. "But what it does say is it takes some time to make that adjustment".

NHLers may be missing but the passion is still there.

The women's national team was announced December 22.

The United States named most of its roster on New Year's Day, but it kept openings for two goaltenders.

Canada has won the last two Olympic gold medals-2010 in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi. Toews won two golds and Belfour won one.
