Janney portrays Harding's mother, LaVona Golden, as ruthless and abusive.

"You did know what was happening, what they were planning to do, didn't you?" he asked, to which Harding exclaimed that she did not. And it all went down at - of all places - the Golden Globe Awards. She was surprised when we showed her scenes from the movie.
"Any of us could've won", she said.
"No, I did not", she snapped before ending the interview.
"No, [I was not involved in the planning]", she said. "I was scared. this had never happened".
She admits she was a tough-love mom but refutes that she was abusive.
Nancy briefly withdrew from competition to heal but was well enough to compete in the Olympics, where she earned a silver medal in women's singles while Tonya came in eighth.
"I wanted her to have what I couldn't", she said.
I, Tonya is a critical success and is now winning awards, but when Sandy spoke to Inside Edition before the film's release, she said she "doubts" she would ever see it.
Tonya appeared on Good Morning Britain to talk about the film - which deals with her life leading up to the incident, and the abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband.
