Starting tomorrow, fans of the team-based FPS can watch their favorite Overwatch League team either in person at Blizzard's eSports arena in Los Angeles, or online through Twitch. As mentioned previously, there are skins for each team in the league so make sure to grab one and represent your team throughout the entire 20 weeks of the inaugural season. The core addition of the patch is an entirely new menu accessed via the Overwatch League button on the main screen. After a heated preseason display, twelve professional teams from America, Britain, China and South Korea will now be going head to head for the official top honours in Blizzard's esports title. Purchasing League Tokens supports the teams in a revenue split with Blizzard, although the details of exactly how the money is split have not been publicly revealed. This in-game currency can only be used for Overwatch League skins.
Earlier today the Overwatch League and social video service Twitch announced a historic esports media-rights partnership for Overwatch, ensuring that every match of the world's first major global city-based esports league will be readily available to fans across the globe.
Watch live or dive into the action later with on-demand videos.
"Our fans love to engage with content on Twitch, and we wanted to drive significant viewership of the Overwatch League in its inaugural season and beyond", said Armin Zerza, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. In annual terms, the deal is comparable to the seven-year, $300M deal struck in late '16 by League of Legends publisher Riot Games with BAMTech.
Twitch will serve as the exclusive third-party broadcast partner for the league's regular season, playoffs and championships in three different languages: English, Korean and French.
One of the biggest moments in esports history is finally here.
