NAACP events to honor ML King Jr. legacy

Principal Chief Bill John Baker has signed an executive order calling for the Tahlequah-based tribe to officially recognize the day beginning next Monday, Jan. 15, and then annually on every third Monday in January. Baker said the declaration was both a tribute to King's contributions and a call to play a part in continuing his work.

As organizations gather throughout Southern Maryland to commemorate the January 15 birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the College of Southern Maryland is joining in the conversation and celebrations occurring locally January 14 and 15.

"He was a remarkable advocate for change for all people of colour in America, including Indian Country", Baker said in a statement. We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its Indigenous population. "Our literature, our films, our drama, our folklore all exalt it". Community Celebration, which honors and celebrates the life and impact of Dr. King. Day through your choice of community service projects. Day to better their communities and follow the legacy of King.

A youth oratorical contest and a concert at the Mosaic Templar's Cultural Center are among the events scheduled for the week leading up to Mega Kingfest on Monday, January 15, at the North Little Rock High School Performing Arts Center.
