However it is also using CES 2018 to announce the Vive Wireless Adapter, which uses Intel's WiGig tech to let you cut that annoying cable.

HTC says it will ship the adaptor in the third quarter.

Also worth noting are the dual front-facing cameras, one more than the current Vive, which HTC says are to "empower developer creativity". The new displays on the Vive Pro will be a 78 percent increase in resolution over the original Vive, HTC explained at press conference on Monday. HTC isn't saying when exactly the new Vive will be available for purchase, or how much it will cost as of yet, though.

Additionally, HTC announced plans to release its own Vive Wireless Adapter, which, like the TPCast, will plug into a Vive-equipped computer to broadcast its video signal wirelessly. "The time has come to move from a PC first to a VR first era", said Viveport president Rikard Steiber. HTC has slightly tweaked the design of the Vive Pro to make it more comfortable and light.

Instead, the new headset is meant to serve as a new flagship product, with the original Vive becoming the company's "entry-level" VR headset.

"There's a clear need in the VR market for a premium VR experience with high resolution display, integrated audio and the best components available today in a headset", said HTC's Daniel O'Brien, General Manager for Vive in the US.

"Wireless VR has been on almost every VR user's wishlist since the technology was unveiled", said Frank Soqui, General Manager Virtual Reality Group at Intel Corporation. Consumer Technology Association forecasted Monday the VR market will see record growth in 2018 with AR/VR headsets and eyewear selling 4.9 million units in the United States in 2018 (a more than 25 percent increase from 2017). Officials have said HTC will release a Vive 2 when it can bring "meaningful innovation" to VR. Stay tuned for our hands-on impressions of the Vive Pro.

These advancements deliver on VR users' desire for higher resolution, improved audio, greater comfort, wireless freedom and immersive content discovery. This is not believed to be the fabled HTC Vive 2, however. Beyond improvements to the user interface, HTC is adding Vimeo videos to the platform. The system even works in environments with multiple Vive users in the same space.
