Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots add up to one billion dollars

The jackpot for Mega Millions is this high because prices went from $1 to $2 a ticket in October. Mega Millions was to roll Friday night for a jackpot of $450 million and the Powerball will roll Saturday at 9:59 p.m. for a grand prize of $550 million.

Americans spent $80.5 billion on lottery games past year, according to the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries.

The latest increase to the jackpot would be the fifth largest in Powerball history if someone matched all six numbers Saturday night.

Two Utahns won $1 million each playing Powerball at KJ's in 2017.

In fact, the Mega Millions jackpot will be worth about $450 million if a victor is drawn Friday night.

Those unclaimed prizes range from $31 million for a ticket purchased in Queens, New York in August of 2006, to $77 million for a winning ticket purchased in Georgia in June 2011.

Robert Hurtado said a winning ticket would be a lot of help.

"From the start, Nevada was against lotteries, it's very interesting, there was a tolerance of legal gambling, legal gaming in casinos early on", said David Schwartz, director, UNLV Center for Gaming Research.

Winning the lottery is a life-changing event that most of us will never get to experience but with this week's open forum, we invite you to dream a little. The odds of winning both are one in 75.6 quadrillion. Four North Carolina players have won the jackpot since 2006.

"We drove all the way here to win the big jackpot", Hurtado said. It's now the fourth biggest MegaMillions prize ever and the 13th largest jackpot in U.S History.

"I bought 20-something dollars worth of merchandise", he said as he held a brown bag of items he picked up while across the state line.
