Poongundran had served as an aide to the former chief minister.

Last night's raid comes just a few days after the IT department raided Tamil television channel Jaya TV, also controlled by Sasikala's family.

Sasikala had been living at Jayalalithaa's residence before she was jailed. There is no connection between the IT raids in Poes Garden & state government. "On whatever reasons the raids are being conducted at residence of Jayalalithaa, the deed is definitely to save EPS and OPS".

Sources said that the raid was carried out following a tip-off that some electronic devices were to be "clandestinely removed" from rooms that VK Sasikala, Jayalalithaa's long-time aide who is now in jail, used during her stay at the Poes Garden home.

Among the premises raided were of Jaya TV and Namadhu MGR, both AIADMK propaganda machines now under control of Sasikala.

Sources in the Income Tax office said that two pen drives and two lap tops were seized by the officials.

Speaking to reporters in Madurai, around 500 km from here, Palaniswami without naming anybody said due to wrongdoings of some persons the raids had happened at Jayalalithaa's residence. "Friday's search is the result of the raids conducted in their houses".

Addressing the media following the raid, the sidelined AIADMK leader said Modi and Jaitley is trying to destroy his family.

Dismissing reports of an alleged political motive behind the searches, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan said the I-T operation was based on specific information. "Our team went at 9 pm and only Poongundran's room, records room and other room used by Sasikala were searched", an IT official told the Press Trust of India.

According to him, it was a "limited mission".
