Before the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history, the Las Vegas gunman checked into the Mandalay Bay Hotel, requesting an upper-floor room with a view of the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, according to a person who has seen hotel records turned over to investigators.

TMZ says Paddock never checked in to the rooms, but claims he had specifically requested "view rooms" facing Grant Park, where hundreds of thousands of people flocked over the four-day concert.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo said he could not confirm whether Paddock had eyed the Life is handsome concert prior to his attack on concertgoers.

This news comes on the heels of a report that Paddock tried to reserve a room in Downtown Las Vegas during the Life is attractive outdoor music festival.

Sheriff Lombardo made the revelation at a news conference where he provided a detailed timeline of events.

Sunday's shooting happened along the Las Vegas Strip, an area brimming with hotels and casinos located in unincorporated Clark County, just south of the Las Vegas city limits.

Marathon organizers said the most important thing people can do is call 911 if they see anything suspicious.

Police recovered almost 50 firearms from three locations they searched, almost half of them from the hotel suite.

On Wednesday, FBI agents trying to understand his state of mind questioned his girlfriend, 62-year-old Marilou Danley, who was out of the country during the attack.

His motive remains unclear.

Danley, who was overseas for more than two weeks, said she was initially pleased when she was wired money from Paddock to buy a house for her family in the Philippines. "We can't comment on an ongoing investigation", she said. He had no known criminal record and nearly no close friends or social media presence.
