LSU tied for 133rd among national universities in the 2018 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings released Tuesday.
U. of C. moved up to No. 3 previous year in a tie with Yale and is the only university in the Midwest in the top 10 list that is dominated by the Ivy League schools.
The 2018 data include information on more than 1,800 US universities and colleges, with Princeton University in New Jersey taking the No. 1 spot for the seventh consecutive year in Best National Universities.
"We appreciate the top-tier ranking, but what matters most for students selecting a school is the match between the particular interests, abilities and ambitions of each individual student and the specific programs and opportunities offered by a particular school", UM spokesman Rick Fitzgerald said. The four colleges come in just below Georgetown University and just ahead of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. SDSU's worldwide business program ranked 12th, while the online graduate education program was 22nd. The north region includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. In a media release touting it's steady climb in the regional rankings over the years, Misericordia renewed past criticism of one aspect of the ranking system: It can reward larger schools simply for being better known.
In February 2016, the Carnegie Classification recognized ULM as an R3 ("moderate research") doctoral-granting institution of higher education, joining the state's other doctoral universities (R1: LSU-Baton Rouge and Tulane University; R2: University of Louisiana at Lafayette and University of New Orleans; and R3: ULM and Louisiana Tech University). At number 5, Stanford was the highest ranked California school. The website boasts "nearly 50 different types of numerical rankings and lists to help students narrow their college search".

"The U.S. News & World Report rankings represent and validate the outstanding performance and achievements of OBU's marvelous faculty, staff and students", President David Whitlock said. Student retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and graduation rate are also factors taken into consideration.
Employer Reputation is based on 30,000 responses to the QS Employer Survey where institutions report the schools where they source the most competent, innovative, effective graduates.
Additionally, the university was ranked an A+ school for B students by U.S. News, named as a university where students with good grades and a strong aptitude for learning have "a good chance at being accepted and thriving, where spirit and hard work could make all the difference to the admissions office".
In recent years, the University has consistently ranked within the top 100 in the country. Among public universities, LSU is ranked 48 among high school counselors out of 162 public universities listed.
