James Franklin Says Penn State Win over Pittsburgh Was 'Like Beating Akron'

Pitt ran 46 plays for 150 total yards and had the ball over two thirds of the first half (21:51 of game time).

As Penn State's starting quarterback, McSorley has always been regarded as a calm, focused and poised leader. But when the fourth-ranked Nittany Lions played Pittsburgh Saturday, McSorley admitted that his nerves affected him because he remembered the late interception he threw in the end zone a year ago."I was a little bit jittery", he said. For the game, Barkley finished with 133 yards rushing.

Barkley drew a mismatch when he ended up one-on-one with Pittsburgh linebacker Saleem Brightwell, who got turned around twice trying to stay in coverage. Kudos to Franklin for getting Penn State to that point.

Coach James Franklin spoke almost 7,000 words this week about the showdown.

Penn State's offense made sure of it. For good measure, he squatted 525 pounds and bench-pressed 405. Barkley is seeking to become the second Heisman victor in program history after John Cappelletti in 1973.

The Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0) are coming from a 52-0 win over the Akron Zipz last week.

"Oh, that argument's going to go on forever", Barkley said, smiling. "You have to believe in yourself". More than that, it's how things work under the guide of second-year offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead.

NOTES: Penn State DE Shareef Miller missed all but a couple of plays last week with an ankle injury.

ATLANTIC 14 Jonathan Taylor ran for 223 yards and three touchdowns, Alex Hornibrook threw for 201 yards and a score, and No. 9 Wisconsin (2-0) pulled away from Florida Atlantic (0-2) for a victory at home.

McSorley and Mike Gesicki connected for two first-quarter touchdown throws.

That drive alone took 8:02 off the clock, but the point is clear: You can play "keep away" from the Nittany Lions, but you better take advantage of those opportunities against one of the nation's best offenses.

STOPPING SAQUON: Barkley lit up the Panthers for 130 total yards and five touchdowns last fall. Included in that drive was a 36-yard yard keeper from McSorley for the longest run of his career. For the game, the fifth-year senior passed 386 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-of-35 passing performance that will likely vault Mayfield to near the top of the very short list of legitimate 2017 Heisman contenders.

Mike Gesicki had a pair of first-quarter touchdown receptions and Barkley finished with 183 total yards and two scores as Penn State ended a two-game skid against the Panthers in front of the largest crowd to pack Beaver Stadium in almost a decade. "It gave the offense great field position".
