Disney turns to AR to sell 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' toys

"Star Wars" fans will have a chance to hunt for a new character from the upcoming "Last Jedi" film as part of "Force Friday II", a three-day event that will feature an interactive "treasure hunt" and the release of new toys from the film franchise.

In many ways, Force Friday is something of an unofficial holiday, meaning Lucasfilm has much more planned than just new toys.

September 1 is Force Friday II, which means it's an exciting day for Star Wars fans as the first wave of Star Wars: The Last Jedi merchandise will be available. Fifteen characters will be seen over the course of the three days, with Lucasfilm noting one of them will be a new character from the film.

Force Friday II is coming soon, and to help celebrate it a new Star Wars augmented reality experience similar to something like Pokémon GO has been announced. You can check out the details of the contest here and the list of participating stores here.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" blasts into theaters on December 15.

The "Find the Force" event will cover 20,000 retail stores spanning 30 countries, and will run from September 1 to September 3.

You can take photos or even short videos interacting with the characters, and even Admiral Ackbar is already discoverable. Use the "Star Wars" app to scan the graphic and you'll unlock an AR character who appears in your room.

If you can't wait till next week, you can see the augmented reality characters in action now by downloading the latest version of app now and unlocking those Penguin-like inhabitants of Ahch-To, Porgs.

In certain areas around the world, people sharing pictures and videos with the AR characters via Twitter or Instagram using specific hashtags across the weekend will be entered into sweepstakes.
