Jerry Lewis's signature "schtick", a man-child with exaggerated mannerisms and a hilariously shrill voice, became one of the most iconic comedic personae ever created.

Ontario-born Jim Carrey credited Lewis with being a major influence on his career.

The legendary entertainer - who rose to fame in the 1950s as one half of comedy duo Martin and Lewis with singer Dean Martin - passed away on Sunday (08.20.17) at 9.15am at the age of 91 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"That fool was no dummy".

He starred in box office hits like "The Bellboy" and 1963's "The Nutty Professor".

"Jerry was a pioneer in comedy and film". Jerry Lewis was an undeniable genius an unfathomable blessing, comedy's absolute! "You'll be missed", De Niro said in a statement shared by senior entertainment editor for The Daily Beast Marlow Stern on Twitter. And Mr. Lewis in particular was a bridge of sorts, reviving the physical comedy of the early film era and passing it along to comic minds still in the formative stages.

Writer-actor Marlon Wayans, Will & Grace's Sean Hayes and stand-up comedian Dane Cook referred to Lewis as a hero and mentor.

Legendary the slapstick-loving comedian, innovative filmmaker and generous fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Jerry Lewis, took his last breath at 91 on Sunday after suffering a brief illness.
