"These hospital rankings validate the commitment of care our physicians and staff provide to our patients across many different specialties at Emory", Jonathan S. Lewin, MD, president, CEO and chairman of the board of Emory Healthcare, said in a news release.

University of Michigan Health System President David Spahlinger said Michigan Medicine's commitment to improving outcomes and patient care likely led to the improved rankings. The U-M Medical School also was 9th in the nation for research-based medical schools in its “Best Graduate Schools” ranking.

Michigan Medicine was followed in the state rankings by Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, which earned rankings in 9 adult specialty categories.

UH Cleveland Medical Center ranked in the top 50 in eight specialties, cancer; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology/GI surgery; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology/neurosurgery; and orthopedics. "By providing comprehensive data gathered by analyzing almost 5,000 hospitals across the country, we hope to give patients the information they need to find the very best care available to them".

Northwestern Memorial Hospital was ranked at no. 13 on the list of top 20 hospitals in the country, the only IL hospital to be named among the prestigious "Honor Roll" list.

Northwestern was also the only IL hospital to rank among the top 20 in the country, though this year it ranked 13th, down from eighth last year.

The two hospitals also received good ratings in all nine common procedures performed in hospitals, for which overall quality of inpatient care was among the factors taken into account.

Two other Emory hospitals - Emory University Hospital (No. 1) and Emory University Hospital Midtown (tied for No. 11) - were ranked in the Georgia list.

He said the project could help the hospital move up in the rankings next year.
