Maya Rudolph Joins Fox's Live Musical 'A Christmas Story'


Saturday Night Live veteran Maya Rudolph will star as Ralphie's mother in Fox's live musical version of A Christmas Story, TVLine has learned.

"A Christmas Story" is set to debut December 17 at 7:00 p.m. on FOX.

Additional casting will be announced in the coming months. The original Broadway production of "A Christmas Story: The Musical" opened November 19, 2012.

The Broadway original of A Christmas Story: The Musical, based on the musical of the same novel by Jean Shepherd, In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, opened in November 2012. The project is also set to feature new original songs from the musical's composing team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (who went on to compose for La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen). Fox's "Grease: Live" brought 12.2 million viewers when it aired in January 2016. He is also an Academy Award-nominated producer, most recently for director Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" and Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies".

First played by Melinda Dillon in the 1983 classic film, the role of "Mrs. Parker" is one of the more significant ones occupied by the many adults who surround Ralphie throughout his misadventures. They will compose several new songs for Fox's live version, with Jonathan Tolins and Robert Cary adapting the book. The TV adaptation will be filmed on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California.
