Search operation launched by security forces in a village in south Kashmir district of Pulwama since last night was called off as militants had managed to escape under the cover of darkness, official sources said.
The search party of forces was sacked upon by militants triggering a gunbattle, the official said. In the gunfight that ensued, one militant, identified as Umar, who was reportedly associated with the Abu Ismail faction of Pakistan-based terror outfit, Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was killed. Three AK-47 rifles were recovered from the slain militants. Role of Umer in different crimes committed by Abu Ismail group is being ascertained. Internet services were suspended in the area after the killing. The encounter started after a group of militants attacked 44 RR army patrol party in the area. "As the cordon was being laid, the hiding terrorists fired upon the security forces, triggering a fierce encounter in which one of the terrorists has been neutralised", he said.
Officials said government forces have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.
