"It's been over two years since Amazon debuted the Echo, which kickstarted the current wave of voice-controlled, virtual assistant-powered speakers".

The retailer said the most popular purchase on Prime Day in the United Kingdom was the Amazon Echo, while the most popular non-Amazon product was the TP-Link Wi-Fi Smart Plug, which works with Alexa or Sony Playstation 4. When it comes to music, the single tweeter+single woofer setup is expected to get "several tweeters".

The sound quality of the HomePod has been a key focus for Apple in its marketing for the smart speaker device, openly comparing it to the inferior audio of the Amazon Echo at WWDC.

The new version of the device will reportedly feature more tweeters to improve the sound quality.

Amazon added that it now allows developers to set up Alexa control of TVs and other entertainment devices.

Amazon has been working on Alexa TV control for awhile.

When Apple unveiled the HomePod, the tech giant quickly positioned it as a rival for existing speaker systems - for example Sonos - rather than the smart speaker products of Amazon and Google.

After the Prime Day event which lasted for thirty hours, Amazon shares traded back above the $1000 mark again after the company called the recent event their biggest sales day ever.

Amazon who opened the event to Prime members also gave buyers who register for a subscription on or before July 11 a chance to access Prime Day deals reported a surge in the number of new subscriptions on its Amazon Prime program. Year-to-date, AMZN has gained 34.22%, versus a 10.17% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period.
