Man guilty in murder of Bella Bond, jury decides

A man was convicted Monday of second-degree murder in the death of a 2-year-old girl known as "Baby Doe" after her body washed up on a Boston Harbor island. On June 25 that year her remains washed up on Deer Island.

The child wasn't identified as Bella Bond until three months later, when Rachelle Bond told McCarthy's friend she had seen McCarthy kill the child, and the friend notified police.

But the trial heard from witnesses who said McCarty was obsessed with the occult and would lock the little girl in a closet to discipline her.

With a second-degree murder conviction, McCarthy will face life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 15 years.

Prosecutors had charged McCarthy with first-degree murder, but the judge said jurors could also consider two lesser charges - second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.

Michael McCarthy was accused of killing the daughter of his ex-girlfriend Rachelle Bond, who testified against him. Both were heroin addicts with whom the girl lived a hard life that came to an end with punches from McCarthy.

Bond pleaded guilty to being an accessory in the murder in February when she admitted to helping her ex-boyfriend, Michael McCarthy, dispose of Bella's body.

McCarthy's defense attorneys said the charge was largely based on the word of Rachelle Bond, a "scheming, manipulative woman" who lied about her daughter's death to cover up her own responsibility.

But Conley said Bond's testimony was supported by independent evidence that she did not know about. She has been in custody since September 2015.

McCarthy's recorded interview with police was played in court, in which he denies killing Bella and says Bond put the blame on him. He said that she killed the child and called her statements during five days of testimony, "a web of lies".

Bond's sentencing hearing is scheduled for Tuesday and that's when she is supposed to be free, after almost two years in jail.

The judge said there were no objections to the prosecution's request that Bond be sentenced to time served, plus probation. In exchange, she testified against McCarthy. "Michael McCarthy was responsible for her death, and the jury spoke". "But the verdict is right, and justice has been rightly served upon the person who took this handsome child's life".

"That's because the leaders every country get together and torture and rape and kill these innocent children every year just so they can drink their blood and eat their flesh", the entry said.
