In the country, the total number of PAN card holders are more than 25 crores while the government has issued the Aadhaar card only for the 111 crore people.

Keep in mind, that once the Aadhaar-PAN linking is done, you can e-Verify your IT returns using Aadhaar. The voluntary compliance period for linking the two crucial cards ends on Friday as the rules come into force from July 1, 2017.

The court had on May 4 reserved the verdict on a batch of petitions challenging section 139AA of the I-T Act, which was introduced through the latest budget and the Finance Act, 2017. Following this, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had said the linking of Aadhaar and PAN will be a "must" for filing of income tax returns (ITR) and obtaining PAN from July 1. It still kept the partial stay on the implementation.

The Centre had earlier said that the programme of PAN had become suspect as it could be faked, while Aadhaar was a "secure and robust" system by which the identity of an individual could not be faked. Supreme Court will finalize it after the Constitution bench addressed the issue of the right to privacy.

While Aadhaar is a biometric authenticated issued by the UIDAI, PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number allotted by the I-T department to individuals and entities.
