"As your next CFO, I want Florida to be a place where government does its job fairly, predictably, and so workers can have great jobs at great Florida businesses".

Rick Scott has just days left to decide the fate of almost three-dozen bills, including one that would require warning labels for lottery tickets.

Rick Scott signed legislation Friday to implement the medical marijuana amendment voters approved past year.

Governor Scott said, "I am honored to appoint Jimmy Patronis as Florida's Chief Financial Officer". Atwater announced in February he was stepping down early to become a vice president at Florida Atlantic University managing finances and economic development. Last year, Scott and Atwater also clashed in their joint appointment of a new insurance commissioner.

Florida's chief financial officer is elected statewide and is a member of the state Cabinet that oversees several key agencies through the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS). Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry was seen as a top candidate, but he decided against seeking the job.

Patronis will serve out the remainder of Atwater's term, and could have an advantage over other Republicans if he chooses to run for a full term in 2018. The term runs until next year, as of today, only former Democratic State Senator Jeremy Ring has filed to run for CFO next year.

Patronis will be sworn in Friday during a ceremony in Tallahassee. The job pays almost $129,000 a year. In March, Patronis was among a number of political loyalists the governor appointed to the state Constitution Revision Commission. But the two clashed a year ago over who should become the state's insurance commissioner.
