Tillerson called Trump at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday to inform him that Warmbier was on an airplane en route to the United States, an official said.

He was met by North Korean Vice Minister of Sports Son Kwang Ho.

He was sentenced in March 2016 after a televised tearful public confession to trying to steal a propaganda banner. Yun demanded his release and North Korea complied on Tuesday, according to the State Department.

Currently, a total of six South Koreans are detained in North Korea, including several religious missionaries accused of treason or espionage.

PotCoin, a company that created a digital currency to "facilitate transactions within the legalized cannabis industry", sponsored Rodman's latest trip to North Korea.

"Sadly, he is in a coma and we have been told he has been in that condition since March of 2016", they said.

The detention of Americans, often sentenced to draconian prison sentences for seemingly small offenses in the totalitarian nation, has compounded tensions between Washington and Pyongyang.

The official, who was not authorized to speak on the record about the sequence of events and requested anonymity, said that after Tillerson consulted with Trump, Yun was dispatched to North Korea.

"We thank you for the opportunity and blessing you've given us to serve your agenda and the American people", said Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who reports suggest may be at risk of losing his job amid internal palace squabbles.

Annabella Vagonis, a family friend from Reston, Virginia, whose daughter was close with Warmbier at U-Va., said, "We were at turns incredulous, shocked, surprised, joyful and sad, all kind of emotions within a nanosecond of each other when we got the news this morning".

On May 21, the day Warmbier would have graduated, UVA student leaders distributed "Free Otto" stickers and organized a tribute in his honor. According to Warmbier's parents, their son was medically evacuated from North Korea in a coma, which he has reportedly been in for over a year after falling ill to botulism and then being given a sleeping pill.

Yun then met last week with the North Korean ambassador at the U.N.in NY.

He said the United States continues to have talks with Pyongyang about three other American citizens who are reportedly detained in the North.

A small group of family friends was nearby to celebrate Warmbier's arrival, cheering and holding signs that read "Pray for Otto" and "Welcome home Otto".

In Tokyo, a visiting senior USA official said Rodman is making the trip as a private citizen.

Earlier Tuesday, Fred Warmbier told The Cincinnati Enquirer that the family will hold a news conference later this week in Cincinnati.

North Korea announced Warmbier's arrest in late January 2016, saying he committed an anti-state crime with "the tacit connivance of the US government and under its manipulation". Pyongyang assented, and preparations were made to bring Warmbier home. Kenneth Bae, an American who was detained for two years in the North from 2012, told the Korea JoongAng Daily last month he was forced to confess his crime and also to fabricate some parts of his story.

Tillerson says the State Department continues discussing three other detained Americans with North Korea.

Two Ohio senators are denouncing North Korea after a resident of their state was said to be in a coma after being released from a prison in that country. But efforts to persuade North Korea to release the men now held had not been successful until Warmbier's release Tuesday.

In Tokyo, a visiting senior USA official said Rodman is making the trip as a private citizen.

There was no clear sign that the former National Basketball Association bad boy would meet leader Kim Jong Un, as he did on previous visits to the isolated country.
