James Hodgkinson launched into Trump tirade before shooting

The shooter who opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball practice on Wednesday had a list of several Republican representatives in his pocket, according to officials briefed on the FBI investigation.

James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Illinois, was shot dead by police after opening fire in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip and suffered other internal injuries.

When asked why he left and why he went to the Washington D.C. area specifically, Hodgkinson said her husband wanted to "work on taxes" with government officials, with a goal of changing the tax brackets.

Duncan told reporters the morning of the attack that he had encountered Hodgkinson who asked him if it was Republican or Democratic lawmakers on the field.

When pressed, Sue Hodgkinson said she didn't want to discuss her husband's politics. "She had no idea he felt as strong as he did", Wagner said. "I can't wrap my head around it, OK?"

"Looking back with 20/20 hindsight, I can see how the guy was troubled, but at the time I thought he was working", Brennwald said. "There's nothing I could do about it". Before leaving IL sometime in March, James Hodgkinson is believed to have sold nearly everything he owned from his home inspection business.

Sue Hodgkinson spoke to reporters Thursday outside her IL home.

A lobbyist was also wounded and said to be in critical condition following surgery.

The shooter, who is known as Tom (his middle name) to his friends and family, was raised in the same IL town where he and his wife resided.

A search of online newspapers shows that Hodgkinson frequently wrote letters to his local newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen of them between 2010 and 2012. She said she thought he was going to return to IL because he'd run out of money. He died after officers in Scalise's security detail and local police fired at him.

"He would just sit and stare at the Golf Channel", she said. Zack Barth, a congressional aide, was shot in the calf, treated and released from a hospital.

President Trump is not planning to attend the game due to security concerns, the White House said on Wednesday.

The FBI has recovered and processed his van, weapons, and cell phone in Virginia.
