'Scalise took a bullet for all of us'

Scalise received numerous blood transfusions as surgeons worked to fix his torn blood vessels and other wounds, Sava said, adding: "We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over the last 36 hours".

Scalise is still in critical condition but is doing better, according to a statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center where the congressman is now confined. Representative Joe Barton of Texas accepted the trophy on Scalise's behalf. The bullet entered his left hip and tore through his pelvis, breaking bones, injuring organs and causing severe bleeding.

Though Scalise was conscious at the scene after he was shot and his office said he talked to his wife before his first surgery, he was in shock by the time he arrived at the hospital, according to Sava.

He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding.

Mr Mika's family said he was still in intensive care but was able to communicate through notes - and had signed the game ball from Friday's congressional baseball game. "He has received multiple units of blood transfusion". Infection also is a risk, especially if the intestines were perforated.

Mr Scalise was among five people wounded in the shooting.

Damage from a bullet occurs when it's traveling.

Doctors "fully expect him to walk", Sava said, "and hopefully run".

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago". "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in".

Vice President Mike Pence earlier on Thursday said he visited the hospital where Scalise was being treated. But he stopped short of providing specifics of Scalise's internal injuries.

"And let's keep the Warmbier family and the Scalise family and all of the victims of the congressional shooting in our hearts and prayers", Trump continued.

Capitol Police, who provided security for the practice, killed the shooter, identified by authorities as James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Ill.

It emerged Hodgkinson had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

The AP said many of those who played wore LSU hats to honor Scalise, who graduated from the university.

On Thursday, the hospital reiterated that Scalise will need more operations and will be in the hospital "for some time".

"Crystal and David have been family to us for years, and we ask that you continue to pray for their full recovery".

And as lawmakers discussed increasing security, House Speaker Paul Ryan urged them to come together following in the incident. Capitol Police say she is in good condition and did not sustain any life-threatening injuries.

"The Congressional Baseball Game has never been about Republicans against Democrats", said Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-C.A., in an opinion piece he wrote for CNN.
