The shooter, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, took aim at roughly two dozen lawmakers at a baseball field in Alexandria, Va., wounding five people - including a two Capitol Police officers, a congressional staffer and a lobbyist. But he will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces additional operations.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding and "an imminent risk of death", Sava said. He said that, when Scalise arrived at the hospital, he was "at imminent risk of death". Hodgkinson has been identified as the suspect in the Wednesday, June.

Sava said that doctors on Thursday had operated on him to fix the broken bone. Also hurt but released from hospitals were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth. Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition. He has been sedated, but has been brought out of sedation periodically and been able to recognize and communicate with his family, Sava said.

"We are especially appreciative of the strong outpouring of love and support from our neighbors, friends, from across Louisiana and across the country, as well as President [Donald] Trump, Vice President [Mike] Pence and all of Steve's colleagues who have reached out during this challenging time", the statement said.

The Democrats won the annual baseball game, 11-2, but said that they wanted the trophy to be displayed in Scalise's office until he returns to work.

I would also like to personally thank all of the first responders who bravely assisted at the scene, as well as the entire staff of MedStar Washington Hospital Center for their continued excellent care.

The president made his comments as he spoke in Miami to announce a new policy on Cuba.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.
