In his first public comments since the shooting, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise looks like he will make an "excellent recovery", doctors say - but that wasn't always the case.
Scalise sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb. "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in".
Scalise was airlifted to the hospital and quickly underwent surgery in the operating room, where he received "many units of transfused blood", Sava said.
Sava said doctors will not attempt to remove what are likely to be hundreds of bullet fragments from Scalise's body, saying the risk of such a procedure typically outweighs the potential benefits.
Once he has recovered, Sava said, Scalise will require rehabilitation. "Five people were wounded in the assault, including a member of House Leadership -- my good friend, Steve Scalise", Trump said in his weekly web and radio address to the nation.
He was practicing for an annual congressional baseball game, working out with his Republican colleagues in a park across the Potomac River from the U.S. Capitol, when a gunman armed with a semiautomatic rifle opened fire.
Hodgkinson was injured in a shootout with police and later died of his injuries, according to officials.
A list of Republican lawmakers was found on Hodgkinson's body, CBS News reported, citing an unidentified United States official.
"Fox News understands that the Capitol Hill police have reached out independently to all of the offices on the list", Herridge said. They, like so many other courageous police officers, represent the very best of us. The FBI continues to process evidence in an effort to assess the potential motivations of the shooter, the agency said in a statement Friday. The dead man's social media posts indicated he'd violently opposed President Donald Trump and the policies of his Republican Party.
