ACT for America staged rallies on Saturday in New York, Chicago, Boston, Denver and Seattle, as well as many smaller cities to denounce Muslims' law (Shariah), which the group says poses a threat to American freedoms.

Participants chanted "No hate, no fear, Muslims are welcome here" on their way to City Hall, while a phalanx of bicycle police officers separated them from an anti-Sharia rally numbering in the dozens.

Sharia "is a legal or philosophical code derived from Islamic scripture and meant to guide the behavior of observant Muslims", as NPR's Tom Gjelten noted.

The so-called "March Against Sharia" protests were advertised as some kind of advocacy stand when they really were just a public platform to promote a prejudiced view of Islam.

Counterdemonstrators, though, outnumbered the protesters by about 2 to 1.

"Stop the killing under Sharia law", yelled one protester. "If they're against sharia, are you against feeding the poor? Because essentially that is Sharia", she told Bandlamudi.

Counter-protesters in Syracuse responded by shouting "Shame!"

Similar demonstrations and counter-protests took place in cities across the country.
