Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said USA withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement had come as a shock for India and he believes America will rethink its decision on the climate change agreement.
In addition to California, Washington and NY, the other members of the U.S. Alliance are Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia.
The "We Are Still In" coalition also features nine states, including California and NY, scores of universities, and leaders of 125 cities from Los Angeles to Chicago, according to a statement released Monday. We signed it due to our commitment to protecting the environment.
"Today, on behalf of an unprecedented collection of USA cities, states, businesses and other organizations, I am communicating to the United Nations and the global community that American society remains committed to achieving the emission reductions we pledged to make in Paris in 2015", Bloomberg said in a statement.
Bloomberg, who is the U.N. Secretary-General's special envoy for Cities and Climate Change, submitted the "We Are Still In" declaration to U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa. The group intends to eventually submit a "Societal Nationally Determined Contribution" to the United Nations.
Trump's withdrawal from the Paris accord - making the US just one of three countries, along with Syria and Nicaragua, not to participate - has been widely condemned by political and corporate leaders. The withdrawal process could take up to three years.
The pact is aimed at combating climate change around the world and helping nations adapt to its effects by requiring countries to present plans to reduce carbon emissions. Specifically, it requires countries to set their own targets for reducing emissions by 2020. The Obama administration, for example, had committed the U.S.to reducing carbon emissions by 26 to 28 percent by 2025.
