Judge homers but Orioles edge Yankees 3-2

After dropping the opener 3-2, NY rebounded with a dominant 8-3 win Tuesday night.

The Orioles took the series opener 3-2 in a Monday matinee and snapped a seven-game skid - their longest drought since losing nine straight in July 2011. Tommy Layne and Adam Warren each got recorded an out to get the Yankees through the seventh.

OK, but there had to be a sense of relief, right? Manager Buck Showalter specifically said in the pre-game show that he hoped Tillman would go deeper than he has been.

"I know my stuff's really good when I'm getting a lot of foul balls", Gausman said. "Today was a good start down that path".

Montgomery is coming off the best start of his rookie campaign and limited Kansas City to one run on two hits without walking a batter and striking out six in 6 2/3 innings on Tuesday. Defensively, in the top of the sixth he made a great running play on a line drive near the wall, and looked solid on the wet field all night. I think they can feed off each other.

The New York Yankees have led the American League East for a majority of this young season, and they have a chance to widen that division lead over the next few weeks. Leading off the game, LF Brett Gardner hit a bomb to right field giving NY a quick 1-0 lead.

"That's true with any club", Showalter said. Montgomery got the start against Baltimore on April 30 and was reached for three runs on three hits and four walks in five innings without earning a decision.

Melky Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, and Chicago rallied to beat Boston in David Price's season debut.

Darren O'Day pitched ideal eighth for the Orioles.

Jose Altuve and Marwin Gonzalez also had three hits apiece, and Alex Bregman added a two-run homer for Houston, which has won seven of its past eight games and leads the majors with 36 victories and 16 road wins. It was the shortest of his nine career starts, all of which have come this season. Mark Trumbo also had a pair of hits and one RBI for Baltimore in the first. The Yankees scored another run in the second on a double (Didi Gregorius) and a single (Aaron Hicks), though they had runners at second and third with one out and couldn't cash in any more. Starlin Castro had two hits and a run. "Our real strength is our depth, 1 through 9", Holliday said. Through the course of the season, you're going to go through that, or you're going to end up with 120 wins and that has not happened.

Bauer (5-4) recorded his eighth career game of 10 or more strikeouts.

Yankees: Aroldis Chapman, who's been on the DL since May 13 with left shoulder inflammation, played catch for a second straight day. 1B Greg Bird (ankle) had seven plate appearances in a simulated game and is expected to begin his rehabilitation assignment Thursday with Class A Tampa.

Chris Tillman couldn't even get through three innings Tuesday, yielding five runs across 2 2/3 frames in a loss to the Yankees.

Tillman was 8-6 with a 4.63 ERA in 19 career starts against the Yankees, so he wasn't very bad versus them when he took the mound.
